Day 4

Day 4
September 11

Today was a very long and difficult day.  We began in Kennewick, Washington along the Columbia River and ended the day in Elgin, Oregon.  The morning ride followed along the Columbia River south then we began clinbing up the Walla Walla valley stopping for lunch in Milton Freewater, Oregon.  After lunch we began a steep climb into the Blue Mountains of Oregon.  The early part of the climb was very hot and fully exposed to the sun through open wheat fields. As we got further up into the mountains we climbed through ponderosa pine forests.

There were times during the climb today that the best I could do was to simply focus on the next few feet.  I think life is sometimes like that.  When life's challenges darken the path and the best we can do is focus on the next few steps - trusting that with each single effort we are getting closer to our destination.

The good news is that we enjoyed a 20 mile downhill at the end of the day and made it to our destination.  Tomorrow is another long day but without the big climb.
